The mehendi (more popularly known here in the US as "henna") and the "sangeeth" (music and dance) parties were on the night before the wedding. Tahir was traditionally welcomed by Priti's uncles and aunts. Indian confectionaries were passed around. Some of the best paav-bhaaji I have eaten (bread and a medley of curried vegetables) and hot chaai got the party started. Priti's sister and friends entertained the modest gathering with dancing, singing and recitation of some beautiful Tamil poetry. Asha Ramesh, her husband and son (all mighty talented) sang in what I think was Punjabi, beat the drum and got us into the groove of the wedding. All this as Priti sat still for the Mehendi artist to work her magic on hands and feet. Mira Nair had nothing on us that night.
Tomorrow, I'll publish images from the wedding ceremony. Again, feel free to leave your comments here. Those who do will be entered into a drawing for a terrific CD called "Rare Pulse" by Dr. Krishna Raghavendra. |
